ACADEMIC WORLD

University of Camerino, a new course in materials science

The vast network of industrial collaborations, as well as the availability of laboratories at the University of Camerino, allows for the launch of internship and thesis projects that bring concrete possibilities for entering the world of work

Starting this academic year 2023-24, the University of Camerino is offering a three-year degree course in materials science. It is a course for those who want to understand what is happening in the materials world and around sustainability.

A correct use of materials and an awareness of their end-of-life reduces the amount of waste, the consumption of raw materials and energy. The acquired knowledge, which will be integrated by many laboratory experiences, will allow to operate in a context in which this information is necessary. Companies that use materials such as polymers, composites, metals, or ceramics need to deal with the increasingly vast offer of new technical solutions, and to reflect about their real needs.

Concretely, possible applications range from the field of components to that of packaging, passing through sectors such as transport, furniture, clothing, and footwear, up to the sector of design, development and sale of materials and molds. The materials scientist is an inherently multidisciplinary professional, and this allows him/her to rationally select among the different options, because the basis of materials science training is the selection, replacement, integration, or technical improvement of the materials used in the technical applications.

The vast network of industrial collaborations, as well as the availability of laboratories at the University of Camerino, allows for the launch of internship and thesis projects that bring concrete possibilities for entering the world of work. A practical degree, for professionals who don't want to sweep dust under the carpet yet would like to remain concretely attentive and up-to-date with the innovations that research and product development in materials offers. This is where the major issues of ecological transition and materials for energy efficiency take over, faced with a solid preparation with respect to the chemical, physical and technological properties of materials. In order to be particularly focused on current needs, the course aims to deal with both designed and natural materials and their possible adaptation to technical needs in contexts that are nowadays generically defined as bio-.

The three-year degree in Materials Science is accessible to students of all types of high school interested in the issue of the use and research developments of materials. The basic knowledge required, in terms of mathematics, physics and chemistry, are certainly within the reach of every motivated student and will in any case be recalled in a timely and suitable manner in the first year’s courses.

The degree course is open to access and the skills provided will allow the acquisition, analysis, and processing of data in research activities in the field of physics and chemistry of materials, the autonomous execution of laboratory procedures, the management and use of electronic equipment and machines, and the study of real problems associated with processes and products, also through the construction of theoretical models.
