Cicala will lead the Italian Association of Materials Engineering

The professor from University of Catania to lead AIMAT 2025-2029, focusing on innovation, teaching, and artificial intelligence

Professor Gianluca Cicala, full professor of Science and Technology of Materials at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Catania (Italy), has been elected president of the Italian Association of Materials Engineering (AIMAT) for the 2025-2029 term.

His election took place during the 18th National AIMAT Conference in Ischia, with 184 votes out of 200 eligible voters supporting his candidacy.

Founded in 1993, AIMAT is the national reference association for the scientific disciplinary sector IMAT-01/A — Science and Technology of Materials — with the aims of promoting and coordinating materials‐related university teaching in Italy and spreading the culture of materials at all professional levels.

One of Prof. Cicala’s main goals is to address “the changes that the IMAT-01/A disciplinary sector is experiencing with the arrival of new technologies and the massive use of artificial intelligence.”

He has proposed “the launch of initiatives aimed at rationalizing the use of innovative tools also in teaching and research, while ensuring, even through innovation, the peculiar aspects of materials engineering that must be oriented toward hands-on skills.”

Currently, the association has about 250 members.
