Fraunhofer IWU develops new composite manufacturing processes for hydrogen applications

Research focuses on lighter and more affordable high-pressure carbon-fiber tanks

Fraunhofer IWU has presented new manufacturing developments for composite components used in hydrogen technologies.

The research primarily targets high-pressure carbon-fiber storage tanks, one of the key enabling technologies for hydrogen mobility. The objective is to reduce production time, manufacturing costs and material consumption while maintaining the highest safety standards.

According to the institute, automation of filament winding and composite consolidation processes will be essential to enable large-scale industrial production of next-generation hydrogen tanks.

The project further highlights the strategic importance of advanced composites in supporting the global energy transition.
