LG Chem and Volkswagen Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop and expand the use of next-generation materials for future mobility, with a focus on lightweighting, performance and sustainability. The agreement was signed at the LG Twin Towers in Seoul.
The collaboration will cover the development of advanced plastics and composite materials, drawing on LG Chem’s expertise in ABS and engineering plastics. The two companies will also assess specific applications aimed at reducing vehicle weight and improving performance.
Another key area will be the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials and cost-efficient solutions for interior and exterior components across Volkswagen Group brands. LG Chem aims to expand the use of its sustainable materials portfolio in automotive applications.
The Korean company has a global ABS production capacity of approximately 2.35 million tonnes per year and offers grades including high-gloss, high-heat-resistant and paintless materials suitable for components such as side mirrors and radiator grilles. lgcorp.com
The agreement also includes joint research and development activities, feasibility studies and information sharing on technology and market trends, supporting the evaluation of new materials for future vehicle programmes.
The LG Chem-Volkswagen collaboration therefore reflects the growing automotive demand for polymeric and composite materials capable of replacing heavier solutions, reducing environmental impact and improving manufacturing efficiency.
