Polestar 5 brings Bcomp’s flax-based composites into series production, marking the transition from concept development to large-scale industrial application. ampliTex™ and powerRibs™ technologies are used in the front seatbacks and tailgate structure of the new electric GT.
The collaboration between Bcomp and Polestar began with the Polestar Precept concept and has now evolved into production for the Polestar 5. A bespoke flax fabric called “Polestar Signature Weave” has also been developed for the cabin, serving both structural and aesthetic functions.
According to Bcomp, its natural fibre composites can use up to 50% less fossil-based material than the conventional plastics they replace and can be up to 40% lighter. Depending on the application, cradle-to-gate CO₂ emissions can also be reduced by up to 60%.
In the front seatbacks, ampliTex™ and powerRibs™ are combined with natural fibre polypropylene (NFPP). ampliTex is a reinforcement fabric woven from European flax fibres, while powerRibs is a three-dimensional reinforcement grid inspired by leaf veins, designed to increase bending stiffness and enable thinner, lighter components.
powerRibs is also used in the tailgate structure, extending the use of natural fibre composites beyond the interior. The components have been validated to meet automotive requirements for durability, safety, UV resistance, scratch resistance and long-term ageing.
Polestar 5 therefore demonstrates how bio-based composites can move from experimentation into series production, combining lightweighting, reduced fossil-material use and integration of structural and design functions.
