SHD develops seven sustainable prepregs for Triple 10 electric concept car

Bio-based, recycled and reused materials are incorporated into the vehicle developed for the Shell Triple 10 Challenge, targeting lightweight performance and a lower carbon footprint

SHD Composites has developed seven different composite material formats for the Triple 10 Challenge, Shell’s electric concept vehicle project exploring solutions to simultaneously improve energy efficiency, charging performance and lifecycle sustainability.

SHD materials have been used across several areas of the vehicle, including bulkheads, front and rear seat structures, load floor, inner and outer A-pillar panels, roof and windscreen supports.

Sustainability played a central role in material development. All seven formats incorporate varying levels of bio-based, renewable, recycled or reused raw materials, aiming to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the performance required by the application.

The new resin chemistries also enable the prepregs to be stored without refrigeration, eliminating the energy normally required for cold storage and transportation.

The Triple 10 project is built around three ambitious targets: charging in less than 10 minutes, achieving an efficiency of 10 km/kWh, and limiting the vehicle’s lifecycle carbon footprint to 10 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

The application therefore demonstrates how new prepreg technologies can contribute to electric vehicle lightweighting while combining structural performance, manufacturing requirements and the growing use of alternative raw materials.
