Success for joint research of University of Catania and ACS

The research work carried out jointly by Professor Cicala's group (University of Catania, DICAR) and Advanced Composites Solutions (ACS) received two important awards

The research work carried out jointly by Professor Cicala's group (University of Catania, DICAR) and Advanced Composites Solutions (ACS) Srl, publisher of our portal, received two important awards during the V International Congress Central and Eastern European Conference on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry jointly with the 14th Mediterranean Conference on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, held in Rome from 27 to 30 Of August 2019.

The researchers of University of Catania received two different awards: the Best Poster Award by Dr. Eng. Claudio Tosto for the work: "Thermomechanical properties of mandrels manufactured by 3D printing for the production of hollow FRP parts” and the Scholarship by Dr. Eng. Giulia Ognibene for the presentation: "The use of thermomechanical technique to support the development of novel materials for additive manufacturing”.

The work presented by Eng. Tosto was focused on additive manufacturing, in particular on the production, by 3D printing, of spindles used to create complex components such as ducts and mountain bike handlebars. The so obtained components, were selected by ACS in Tortoreto plant, where Eng. Tosto, PhD student in the group of Professor Cicala, performed his internship scheduled by the project AMA (Advanced Material for Additive manufacturing) financed by PON Research and Innovation 2014-2020 - Axis I " Investments in human capital " - Action I.1 "Innovative PhD using industrial characterization", in collaboration with ACS. Dr. Eng. Ognibene, research fellow at DICAR, presented a work on the use of thermo-mechanical characterization for the development of materials used in additive manufacturing. This work, also used for the tests performed at ACS, was developed within the projects COMMAND, PolyAdv e MAMMA that Prof. Cicala coordinates at DICAR.

Both presentations are parts of a wide research project which, thanks to the incessant ACS contribution, is carrying to the development of novel materials and technologies of great interest in the composite materials area. During the next months further results will be published and could also be possible to observe a demonstration of the introduced innovations, as the involved researchers and the entrepreneurs hope.
