Syensqo to supply composites for NOEMI Aerospace’s new electric seaplane

The nine-seat amphibious aircraft will use MTM 45-1 carbon fibre prepreg for its airframe, with the 21-metre wing manufactured using out-of-autoclave technology

Syensqo has been selected by NOEMI Aerospace as an advanced materials partner for the company’s new all-electric amphibious aircraft for regional transportation. The project aims to develop what NOEMI describes as the world’s first certified fully electric amphibious seaplane.

Designed to carry nine passengers and operate from both water and conventional runways, the aircraft will also be suitable for cargo, search and rescue and medical evacuation missions.

Composite materials will play a key role in reducing structural weight. NOEMI will use Syensqo’s MTM 45-1 carbon fibre prepreg for the airframe and AeroPaste structural adhesive for wing assembly.

One of the most technically significant aspects concerns the wing itself. NOEMI intends to manufacture its skins and spars in a single 21-metre span, using an out-of-autoclave (OoA) process. MTM 45-1 is a toughened epoxy matrix system developed, among other applications, for OoA production of large primary aircraft structures and is supported by NCAMP databases.

Removing the need for an autoclave for structures of this size can help simplify manufacturing while reducing processing costs and capital requirements. At the same time, carbon fibre contributes to the low structural weight that is particularly important for a battery-electric aircraft.

The NOEMI-Syensqo collaboration therefore provides another example of the evolution of composites towards large primary aerospace structures manufactured outside the autoclave, in this case supporting the emerging electric aviation sector.
