Teijin is bringing carbon fibre composites into a new personal mobility application. WHILL has selected Teijin's Sereebo P CFP carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic for key structural components of its new Model C Lite, a battery-powered, single-seat device designed for last-mile mobility.
The CFRTP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic) combines high strength, low weight and design flexibility. Its high flow characteristics during moulding enable thin and complex geometries, with applications on the new vehicle including the foot support, back support, armrests and battery case.
According to Teijin, compared with traditional materials such as aluminium and magnesium, injection-moulded Sereebo P CFP can reduce weight as well as manufacturing costs and complexity. The material is supplied in pellet form and can be processed using standard injection-moulding machines, supporting its use in industrial-scale manufacturing.
Sereebo P CFP also incorporates PIR (post-industrial recycled) carbon fibre uniformly dispersed in a polyamide resin. The application therefore highlights a potential route for expanding carbon fibre thermoplastics into products where lightweight performance, series production, design freedom and cost efficiency must be combined.
Teijin plans to expand the use of Sereebo composites across the mobility sector and other applications requiring lightweight, strength and design flexibility, including drone and robotic parts as well as electrical and electronic components.
