Toray develops polyester-nylon fibre with at least 93% recycled content

The new technology combines recycled content in both polymers while maintaining quality and functionality, and will debut in the ARTIROSA CX textile range for premium applications

Toray Industries has developed a new polyester-nylon composite fibre containing at least 93% recycled material by mass, calculated on the total weight of the raw yarn. The figure applies to the newly developed yarn itself and does not represent the recycled content of the final fabric or garment.

The technology builds on expertise developed through Toray’s &+™ (and plus) recycled fibre brand and uses recycled raw materials in both the polyester and nylon components.
Composite fibres can deliver added functionality, sophisticated textures and subtle visual effects, but combining different polymers makes it more difficult to increase recycled content while maintaining consistent quality. Toray says it addressed this challenge through its expertise in polymer design and composite spinning.

The company will now assess the technology for mass-production viability and continue research aimed at further increasing recycled-material content in composite fibres.
The new fibre has been incorporated into ARTIROSA® CX, a textile range aimed particularly at premium and luxury applications, where sustainability requirements must be combined with demanding aesthetic and functional performance.

ARTIROSA CX combines Toray’s composite-spinning expertise with Japanese know-how in weaving, knitting, dyeing and finishing. The fabric features a dense, finely textured surface and a crisp, sophisticated feel. Through fabric design and finishing, it can also provide properties such as waterproofing, durable water repellency and wind resistance.

Toray plans to market ARTIROSA CX for men’s and women’s outerwear, urban outdoor wear and premium casual wear, while continuing development through nylon blends, natural-fibre combinations and additional post-processing techniques.
