YouRban brings composite recycling directly to where waste is generated

The European project coordinated by Politecnico di Milano has tested a mobile facility for on-site treatment and reprocessing of end-of-life composites, with a particular focus on GRP

A truck-mounted facility capable of travelling directly to where composite waste is generated is at the heart of YouRban, a European project coordinated by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano., in Italy.

The mobile system has been designed for the on-site treatment and reprocessing of end-of-life composites, with a particular focus on glass fibre-reinforced plastics (GRP), widely used in products ranging from skis and tennis rackets to automotive components, wind turbine blades and construction materials.

By bringing recycling technology closer to waste generation sites, the project aims to reduce transportation requirements and create new opportunities for recovering secondary raw materials.

YouRban involved seven partners from Italy, Spain, Austria and Lithuania and was funded by the European Union under the New European Bauhaus (NEB) programme.
